Dear John:

You suggest I “shoot some deliberately unlovely material…images that don’t (to your eyes) ‘work.”” This reversal of the senses reminds me of those Transcendentalists who, to see the world from a different angle, stood on their head. There’s blood here, my friend, you’re on the right track. Of course there are photographers of the freakish and the morbid, such as Diane Arbus and Joel-Peter Witkin; but then you add, “the mystery that is the forest.”
