In
the clubhouse, Carlos
tells me of when, a student
in Guatemala, he was |
hung
from a ceiling, tortured by police, for his leftist leanings, |
an
American advisor looking on, grinning. |
In
1973, living in Paris,
a Professor of Political Science, he was hired as a teacher by
the Chilean Government. |
 |
With
tickets in hand, at Orly Airport he saw a headline: "Salvador Allende, President of Chile, Commits
Suicide."
|
Oracle,
or old wounds, he turned to his wife and said, "Something's very wrong. Allende wouldn't take his own life."
Twenty-eight
years later, living in Florida, Carlos
is the condo's Maintenance Director,
and the owner of several thousand books.
