Following
a path means following an already established
order, or at least acknowledging such an order — hence,
the importance of the path as an agent in certain
myths.
On
Memorial Day, mutable
as Zeus, mist stretches over
the valley. Zip up camouflage
pants, don green sweater
with
holes and frayed
cuffs, and
emerge where the sun
is beginning to warm fields of wild mustard plants.
A
single white lily marks the route to water still
flowing;
but low, slimy green. Walking on rocks the familiar way
appears, and
clever birds fly from the bushes.
Walking
along the river, no place to cross,
The old guide-
posts gone, "the data suggests a 'fuzzy core,'
one that is
larger than expected, without a sharp boundary,
perhaps
partly dissolved," a new path to the mountain will
have to
be dredged up.
